Summertime and I am feeling good!

“Do I still need therapy?” is usually the next question that is asked. While being outside more often, getting more sunlight on your skin, and having fun travel plans does make for a potent combo of feeling much better, it can also be challenging to continue to address the other stuff going on in your life. It is important to think about how you can continue to gain skills needed and talk through things as they happen to ensure healing is still taking place. There is always a balance to therapy and sometimes when things are feeling really good or you feel really good, there is a strong desire to stop the process.

I would suggest talking about this with your therapist to make sure that you both are in agreement (while at the end of the day you have full autonomy to choose to stop therapy). The benefits of having the conversation include: hearing what your therapist thinks about your progress, brainstorming a new cadence for attending therapy, seeing if bi-weekly or monthly check-ins make more sense, or overall if therapy needs to be terminated. The goal is to assess without making an impulsive decision and causing a set back in the future. Therapy will always be there for you to return, but sometimes reaching out is the hardest part. It is important to make sure that progress is not halted because we start to feel really good. An open conversation with your therapist should take place and your therapist will be able to provide feedback and suggestions on next steps.
