Checking-In in Recovery
It is important to be checking in with yourself and how things are going in your life. Something that happens often is people get caught up in going through the motions (work, errands, spending time with family, doing chores, prepping for the next day, rinse and repeat). The normal day to day routine can become very mundane and bring up feelings of boredom, isolation, sadness, or even anxiety. The goal is to begin checking in with oneself to see how you are feeling and see what you need to add or subtract from your life to feel happier overall.
From an addiction standpoint, if you are not having any fun in life, you more than likely will not stay clean or sober because what is the point? Not having things to look forward to or bring about a sense of excitement has the ability to bring back old patterns of thinking that are always the most healthy. The goal here is to determine some ways to bring fun back into your life. Some of these things can include others or they can be done solo as well.
When we are aware of our feelings and our needs, this allows us to begin making changes that improve our lives. Many people want others to do this for them, and while that might have been a way that needs were met in the past, it is crucial that we begin to advocate for ourselves and really build on our own independence. Having needs and feelings is not a bad thing. That is all part of the human experience, but how we get those needs met and how we communicate our feelings is so important for our continued healing and recovery.
