Healing Isn’t Linear
So many times in therapy we will have a set back before when we think that we are done with a subject we are processing. Clients will say “I thought that I would be over this” or “It has been ten years, why am I still struggling?” The truth of the matter is that healing is not linear as we continue to peel back the layers. Things that impacted us as children can show up in adulthood. Events that we feel like we healed from sometimes show back up years down the road.
The great part about this is that each time it comes back up, we see it from a different angle or perspective. (Usually one that has evolved and continues to heal). Releasing all expectations and time frames around healing allows you and your therapist to explore all that is present without any judgment. Fulling immersing yourself in the process and allowing therapy to flow where it goes is all part of the process. The need to control, meet a deadline, or a strong desire to move past something quickly shows me that there is more below the surface to be explored.
Therapy is like a marathon and while initially it might take more time to get into a flow, long term it has potential to be and feel different for you. You are welcoming, open, and ready to take part in your own healing journey. My suggestion is to lean in and let the process work for you!
