Dear Future Me...

One of my favorite exercises for my clients is a dear future me letter. In this letter, they sit and reflect on what they want their future to look like. I will set some relaxing music in the background, hand them paper and a pen, and let them get to work. Some clients need more direction while others feel ready to begin. I try to keep this exercise as open ended as possible. There is truly no right or wrong way to do this exercise. Find a nice, comfortable place to write, grab a pen and paper, put something soothing on in the background and start to free write. No judgments, no expectations, just think and reflect.

Here are some prompts to think about while writing:

  • What have you achieved? What do you want to achieve in the future?

  • What fear did you conquer?

  • How did you grow?

  • Why are you proud of yourself?

  • How did you change? How did you heal?

  • How did you learn to trust yourself?

  • What did you overcome?
