Be Where Your Feet Are

While working in substance use treatment, one of the early phrases that I heard that stuck with me was to 'be where your feet are'. When you really sit back and reflect on that, how often are we in the present moment versus stuck up in our heads? I know that for me, I am often in my head thinking about all of the things. This simple phrase is helpful to redirect me to being present. 

This phrase would be especially helpful for people who struggle with depression and thinking about the past. It is also especially helpful for people who are constantly thinking about the future and trying to plan or control what might happen. Taking a moment to observe all sensations that you experience in that moment is important because you might actually notice something that you would have missed before.

Strengthening that muscle is important and allows for greater awareness in the future. As you take a minute to observe, notice how you are feeling in this moment. Are you carrying any tension in your body? Are your shoulders up at your ears? Is there something in the room that is bringing you joy or frustration? Take it all in and simply observe. If there are things that need to be changed, this could be a great thing to implement for yourself and if it leads to bigger changes, talking about it in therapy is always helpful too!
