Practical Self-Care

Self-care is a wonderful thing that has taken off in pop culture. The one thing that I see with self-care is people booking extravagant trips, buying expensive clothing/accessories, or going to a fancy dinner. While all those things are considered self-care, we are overlooking the more simple things that can be considered self-care that are great for us and our mental health. By this I mean, snuggling your pet, making a healthy meal, spending time outside, or going on a walk. These things don’t cost a lot of money and are things that can be done around the house or locally to where you live. Some of my favorite forms of self-care include hiking, reading a good book, and making a to-do list to feel more in control of what I need to accomplish that day or week.

The other great part about self-care is that each person has different things that ‘fill up their cup’. What you might consider self-care someone else might not and that is perfectly okay! The goal is to explore different means of self-care so that you have an arsenal of options when feeling burned out, overwhelmed, or just need a good ol’ fashioned reset. Something that I try to remind my clients about is that the things that you found fun or interesting when you were a child, are probably similar things that you would enjoy as you have aged. Life and new expectations impacts our ability to tap into our inner child. By giving ourselves the space to try out what once worked can open up new (old) interests and something that brings us joy and makes us feel better! What do you like to do for self-care?
